BAFFLE - News and Events

BAFFLE Reading 20th June

This was the annual BAFFLE Bloomsday reading but for one reason or another was a somewhat belated celebration. However this did not take away from the event as there were 15 poetry participants who performed to a good crowd gathered in Harney’s Bar in Loughrea. The audience was presented with a contrasting mixture of poetry from tear jerking sad to belly laughing bawdy and all in between. The poetry was interspersed with extracts from Ulysses skilfully read by Padraic Barrett

The eminent judge for the night was Tony Callanan, formerly of Stockton’s Wing who delivered a very comprehensive summation of the entries and announced runner up and third who turned out to be husband and wife duo Ian and Siún McDonald. Siún’s poem, as Gaeilge, entitled ‘Níl’ considered the topical subject of the recent Referendum. It was her first time to recite her own poem at a BAFFLE night and she now gains the rank of ‘Baffler’. The poem by Ian entitled ‘Coming Out’ was an irreverent view on those people who have read Ulysses.

But Tony Callanan certainly came up with a worthy winner in the name of Margaret Hickey with her poem ‘The Widow’. The lonely world of widowhood depicted in four short verses captivated the audience who nodded in agreement with its sentiments.

Others to perform that night were:

Eamon McNally, Joe Conmy, Mary Ida Kelly, Wiltrud Duell, Joe Kennedy (poem read by Ann Marie Kennedy), Eileen Smith, James Kennedy, Tom Haran, Lucy McCrann, Barbara Glynn, Breid Sibley and Pat Lawless.
