Night in The Turtle

The first gathering on the new year took place in The Turtle Bar on the 5th March. It was a very good night with 12 readers. All the poems were entertaining with subjects as diverse as The England/Ireland Rugby match, Beethoven, Jonathan Ross, love the second time around, and one poem in Irish to start the ball rolling for Seachtain na Gaeilge 2010. A receptive audience with a big open fire and plenty of sandwiches to soak up the drink made for a very enjoyable event.

Winners on the night were: 1st Wiltrud Duell. 2nd Ian McDonald, 3rd Joe Kennedy.

Other readers were Victoria McNally with a poem about her sister, Siún McDonald with ‘Bruach na Tra’, James Kennedy, Joe Kelly, Margaret Hickey, Ray Gately, Eamonn McNally with a serious poem for a change, about his Uncle John returning for a funeral, Anne Marie Kennedy and Johnny Kelly.

The night was very ably emceed by Mary Ida Kelly and the audience and the winners were particularly pleased with the choices of the competition judge Noelle Lynskey.

Note that the three winning poems above are featured in ‘Poems of the Month’ for March.
