‘One Day’ in the Life of BAFFLE

Bloomsday was celebrated in fine style in Loughrea, when BAFFLE held their now annual outing in Harney’s Bar on the anniversary of the day described in James Joyce’s epic, ‘Ulysses’.

The theme for the poems on the night, ‘One Day’, echoed the duration of the events depicted in that novel. Most of the 15 performers and many of the audience got into the spirit of the night by dressing in period style, and Molly Bloom (Margaret Hickey without the wig!) actually made an appearance to read some of her lines from the masterpiece.

Angela Cummins undertook the onerous task of emceeing for the evening and did a really great job entertaining the large gathering with songs between poetry readings.

Judge and author, Alan McMonagle, read a well received story from his own work before the competition, and, when summing up, expressed himself well pleased with the mixture of comedy and imagination as well as the breadth of the entries.

The winner was Medbh McDonnell with a great poem entitled 'Get Real, Princess'. In second place was Siún McDonald, whose Donegal blas and Irish language reminded the judge of his own grandparents, also from Donegal. Brid Sibley’s third placed poem was also strongly commended.

BAFFLE Bloomsday has now established itself as a permanent event in the annual arts callender for East Galway. We all look forward to the 16th June 2012
